Aida Quilcue

Aida Quilcue is the leader of the Cauca Regional Indigenous Council (CRIC), and one of the key figures behind the Social and Communitarian Minga process in Colombia. In December 2008 her husband, Edwin, was killed in an attack by the Colombian army. Seemingly the intended victim of the attack was Aida. In this interview Aida talks about the situation facing indigenous peoples in Colombia, the Social and Communitarian Minga, and what it means to be a victim in Colombia.

After facing the police's bullets, and suffering one death and 122 serious injuries, the Minga of Social and Communitarian Resistance finally gets President Uribe to agree to a public debate in La Maria Indigenous Reserve, Piendamo, Cauca department, Colombia on 2nd November 2008. Minga leader and head of the Cauca Regional Indigenous Council Aida Quilcue gives this emotional, inspirational speech, live on national television and addressing President Uribe and his cabinet directly. Just over a month later, on 16th December 1008, Aida's husband Edwin Legarda was murdered by the Colombian army when they ambushed his car in an attack meant for Aida herself. Seven soldiers are currently on trial for the crime.

STILL STANDING
by Kwayzofilms

Lidia arrived to the slums with her three children six months ago as an internal refugee after her husband was abducted by the guerrilla. Unable to find work and trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, she is forced to do whatever she can in order to support her three young children and carve out a life in this new and alien environment. Jonathan has lived in the slum his whole life. An ex-paramilitary and gang member he has recently turned to the leader of a religious sect who claims he is the second coming of Jesus Christ for salvation. Emerging from a life of violence and conflict that haunts him and his friends with tragic consequences, he tries to follow a new path, one that he hopes will lead to a better future.

Set in a slum of Medellin, Colombia, this documentary takes the viewer on a intimate journey into Lidia and Jonathan's past and present, their fears, hopes and dreams in the face of unforgiving obstacles and dangers, and their own attempts to come to terms with their lives at this major crossroads. It is an everyday look into the lives of two marginalised people which is retold in countless forms by millions of Colombians that must face the daily reality of poverty, social exclusion and violence.
